From crisis......opportunity.....

The discussion begun by Delmar as a result of his situation with their Clinical Society raises a whole new level of discussion which is why I moved the conversation here. This may be something to add to the charge of the Chapter Structure Task Force chaired by Sam. It raises issues for discussion not only for the metamorphosis of chapters but also National and might warrant some discussion with them after we've batted it around here for a while. (To show where this comes from I included the messages that preceded, starting with Delmar's situation with the Clinical Society, below.)

For those not aware, the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care is in the process of a major restructuring where they would force all state "chapters" (they are not really chapters) to join the National as chapters at an onerous dues allocation rate (60/40 state/national the first year; 15/85 state/national the 2nd year onward) or cease using the name of the organization. As a result of this, we are now in discussion with the NJ group to absorb them OR to help them incorporate as a 501c3 with us providing the operations through an operating agreement. My understanding is that it may be a survival move on the part of the National group rather than a reasoned strategic plan. It raises the issue of why other NASW chapters couldn't do the same thing or why National NASW shouldn't consider a strategic overture on the National level to them? Seeing how the Clinical Federation dissolved nationally and from the comments below has collapsed in some states, this may be a good time to think about this evolving crisis as opportunity on many levels.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

Our clinical society hit the dust 15 years ago. It could not compete with what the chapter could do to promote clinical social work. Go to its Fairwell Party. And don't look back. Carol T

They are still separated; however, almost all are members of NASW-LA as well since they need the insurance. Let us know how you progress. Carmen

Delmar, this is great. This is a wise move to unify the social work profession. Good luck on getting this accomplished. Hoyt.

Dear Colleagues,
We are in talks with our state clinical society about having their activities absorbed by our chapter. How many of you have had them merge into your chapter and could you share with me whether you made any bylaws changes that acknowledge them and the process you went through. Delmar

Delmar you lucky guy. I wish this would happen for us here but our Society is pretty strong. My suggestion is to make them a "council" or special interest group (SIG) with a small budget but no direct staffing. As a council they can make use of all the chapter services such as newspaper, email, website, and perhaps put on a few CEU event where they can keep the money they net as a council. No separate bank account though. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This quote is widely attributed to Richard Nixon who said it on tape, but sources say it was actually Joseph Kennedy, father of JFK.
