Chapter governance restructuring is an important issue that I believe Chapter Execs should be discussing. Chapter execs are not merely salaried staff directly supervised by the Board of Directors, but rather, chapter execs are more like Presidents and CEOs of organizations and have a more peer status on the Board of Directors. The current chapter presidents are more “chairs” of the Board of Directors. Some of you more radical execs recognize this model as a “corporate” model, but don’t be put off by the term “corporate.” Many private non-profits operate on this model. By the way, I think this applies on the national level too.
Exec performance and salary should be based on the chapter’s accomplishments, not on the individual execs personal performance. A good example of how twisted this could become is when our Board looked at the traditional exec performance review, one boilerplate item was how well does the exec supervise chapter staff. Board members didn’t know how to evaluate that, so some suggested that chapter staff evaluate the exec and provide a confidential performance appraisal of the exec to the Board. How’s that for turning tables.
This model focuses the attention of the Board on the goals and performance of the chapter as an organization, not on the management style or personality of the exec.

When you talk about "corporate model" are you talking Heidi Klum or Kate Moss? The corporate model I see with National looks a little more like Kate Moss - on an anorexic binge.
Bur seriously, referring to your plea to our colleagues on the e-mail, I agree we ought to agree on a method of having this ongoing dialogue that is better than the e-mails we have going back and forth, but only 10 of us registered here so until we all get in here our e-mail will be additionally clogged with the back and forth that doesn't always capture the full message string.
Unfortunately Carol S set up the Execs only listserv a year ago and got only 1/2 of the Execs to sign on.
If we are going to address the issues that are a matter of survival and get past the emotions that deter intelligent discourse, we need to get us all into the conversation.
Walter, for some reason I thought all EDs were quite facile with blogs, but apparently not. I know Joel had his own blog going on his website.
If we keep referring to the blog, perhaps more EDs will sign up. As you may know, this blog is by invitation only, for obvious reasons.
So let's keep after them.
I'll try keep this going by posting some of the major topics that appear in our emails.
