2008 Virtual DA Feedback

I know there’s some nasty email going around out there and I wanted to tell you that I believe we had more of a positive than negative experience here in CA. The key was to have group settings and a computer tech person to support users at each site. While the glitches with the technology were frustrating, it got worked out and we got some workarounds from you all.

I hope that the majority of the delegates across the country had more of a positive experience than a negative one but I guess Survey Monkey will evaluate that.

At a recent adhoc ED teleconf, we spent virtually all the time discussing the implications of the bylaws amendments and no time on the technology problems. That means to me that it worked.

Our Chapter President, Stacie Hiramoto had an overall positive experience despite hurdling some technical problems that she had with the laptop that was assigned to her in the computer lab we were using. Another key aspect that perhaps would be difficult to analyze is that whether the groups were using T-1 high speed lines, which are far faster than any DSL network setups that Chapter offices might have (including ours).

Thanks to National President Jim Kelly for helping us secure the California State University East Bay site in Northern CA (at no cost) and to our Board member and USC Assist. Dean Gil Carmona in helping us get the southern California site at USC Orange County (at no cost).

Obviously, the message is that if we all work together and act like social workers (problem solvers), it can and did work. And we had fun in the chat rooms (both official and unofficial).

My president has shared some of the email messages that are flying around on the president's list serve and I have to say that I am amazed at the anger and viciousness of some of the posts. The most recent one she shared was the most sarcastic email thanking national for the timely notice of the COCP meetings and for the transparency and hopefully they can meet virtually.

I am having a hard time understanding this level of anger. I know people were frustrated and I know they were angry. But the level that I have seen on these posts is over the top. What can we as ED's do to help calm the masses.

I agree with the need to pull together and health the Associations wounds but even some of our EDs are bitter about the switch in the DA and fought the bylaws amendment giving the National Board the power. To top it off, some of our EDs were also sorely disappointed about the defeat of the Peace Committee amendment.

What's missing is more communication and inclusion of EDs at the national decision making level. That does start with Betsy. Mega EDs have point out a feeler to Betsy to start the dialog. We EDs can be a great resource and help in pulling the Association back together but we need National to come back to us on a two way street.
